What is a private school test and what do you need to do to apply?
The High School Admissions Test (SSAT) and the Independent School Admissions Test (ISEE) are the two most prolific standardized admissions tests used in US private schools today. Even if your child did well in elementary school, passing these standardized tests is par for the course for admission to private schools. You may argue that all of your child’s teachers in elementary school love him and that he gets good grades, but like everything in life, this is a whole new facet of your child’s development. This type of testing is essential as admissions staff cannot afford prior knowledge and awareness of what your child may or may not have learned in their primary education. Standardized test results set an objective benchmark of your child’s abilities against all other applicants. That is why they are necessary.

What makes a private school test useful is that it shows how your child compares to other applicants, who can come from anywhere in the country. Although they provide an adequate projection of your child’s academic ability, however, they do not address other factors such as goals, personality, and other interests, etc.
The SSAT is administered at two levels: the lower level covers students in grades 5 through 7, while the upper level covers students in grades 8 through 11. The ISEE on the other hand is given at the Middle Level or grades 6 through 11. 8 and the Upper Level or grades 9 to 12. It also includes a Lower Level for grades 4 and 5. You must apply in person, as the school you are applying to will not apply for you. Please note the registration deadline as well. The test is divided into several sections. The Verbal mainly covers reading comprehension and vocabulary. Mathematics, on the other hand, deals with basic subjects like algebra, geometry, and basic arithmetic. An essay portion is also included on the SSAT. Incorrect answers are penalized by subtracting a quarter point for each incorrect answer from the total number of correct answers. A quarter point will be deducted for incorrect answers. Unanswered questions will not be credited in any way.
Test preparation is essential for any private school exam. It is imperative that any child wishing to apply take either the SSAT or the ISEE, depending on the requirements of their future school.
