Training a Chihuahua Puppy: Tips to Make Potty Training Easier

Training a Chihuahua puppy should be done on a strict schedule and there should be no question as to who is in charge. Since Chihuahuas are naturally temperamental, you need to start from a young age correcting and teaching your pup how to behave, and housebreaking is no exception.

Since Chihuahua puppies are so small and their bladders don’t have much capacity, they tend to have accidents at night. One way to prevent this is to not give water two hours before bedtime. Water should also not be given at night. By simply following this simple tip, most accidents can be avoided.

Your pup should also know that there is a routine to this potty training, and that routine will be followed every day. Also, make sure everyone in the family follows this rule too. If you have to go away for the weekend, know that your daughter will also keep her puppy during this time.

By not adhering to a strict schedule, your Chihuahua puppy’s potty training progress is greatly slowed down, and even reversed.

You might also consider buying a crate for your puppy, as unsupervised puppies tend to have more accidents. If you find that you can’t always control your puppies’ movement in the house, keep them in a crate to prevent accidents. You can keep them on a leash, but they tend to get tangled up pretty quickly.

The main thing when you train a Chihuahua puppy is to have a lot of patience and give him a lot of positive reinforcement.
