Temperament, Health Problems, Grooming, and Living Conditions of the Standard Schnauzer Dog Breed

Temperament: This is an intelligent dog that will make a great and loyal member of the family. The Standard Schnauzer has good guard instincts and will protect the family and home. They are easy to train and are good with children. You have to be a good pack leader for this breed, and they can get strong. Being consistent and firm with your training will help this dog to be a good balanced dog in every way. They have a lot of energy and will need good daily walks and training.

The Standard Schnauzer dog will love modern dog sports such as obedience, agility, disc dog and flyball, as well as exercising his herding instincts. They are ranked 18th out of 80 breeds for intelligence in Stanley Coren’s book The Intelligence of Dogs. This is a dog that will love to learn and will need to use his physical and mental energy on a daily basis. There must be firm guide lines to help the dog to follow and this can stop acts of bravery, become stubborn and demanding. Socializing this dog well as a puppy will help him stay balanced.

Health Problems: The Standard Schnauzer has few health problems. They are prone to hip dysplasia and in some lines to tumors. As with any dog, it is very important that you make sure they are up to date on all vaccinations, deworming, and heartworm preventatives. Most licensed veterinarians also suggest that you take your puppy or dog in for a checkup at least twice a year.

Grooming – These dogs will need grooming as the soft undercoat can become matted so daily brushing is required. They will need trimming twice a year. The face will need cleaning after meals. This is a low-shedding dog.

Living Conditions: This is a good dog for apartment life if given enough mental and physical exercise each day. The Standard Schnauzer can live without a garden.
