We have always been taught not to judge people by their appearance. Our parents, teachers, and even textbooks say that it’s not fair to judge someone without knowing them personally. However, the truth is that most of us are born critics, and we can’t help but judge sometimes despite the unwritten rule to keep our biases to ourselves. This leads us to act in ways that, despite being seemingly acceptable, discriminate against others based on their appearance.

Take, for example, the story of Mr. Preston. With three knocks and a hoarse ‘Good morning, this is Mr. Preston,’ he walked into the laundromat and shook the receptionist’s hand. The latter directed him to the reception area and told him that the manager (the owner of the business) would be with him shortly. Still wearing his Wayfarers, Mr. Preston sat down on the only couch in the reception area, crossed his legs, chewed on his gumless Wrigley, and opened a Top Gear magazine intended for visitors like himself. He even whistled a Zeppelin song as he flipped through the glossy pages of the car magazine.

“It looks awfully dirty,” the receptionist whispered to her boss as they both gazed through her office window at the Kurt Cobain dress. ‘Is he the SEO guy?’ asked the boss. Incensed, he continued, ‘Don’t you know we’re a housekeeping business? We are the best laundry in Seattle… We are the best in Seattle! How dare he show up at a business meeting looking like this? And where did he get those shoes? They’re terribly worn out!”

The receptionist walked out of her boss’s office, closed the door carefully, and approached the gruff-looking SEO reseller. ‘Mr Preston… it appears that our current SEO contract with another company has not yet expired. My boss asks him to come back after a year or two, and we hope that when he comes back he’ll be wearing at least a well-washed Penguin polo shirt…and a clean, white pair of shoes.”

Clearly, in a business dealing with direct contact with potential customers, physical appearance is part of the marketing package. While your appearance may ultimately count less than your conversational skills, convincing progress, or marketing savvy, it’s still an important factor that can help close a deal.

An SEO reseller needs to understand that the reselling business is not just about the reselling business; it is also about the SEO reseller. Few people are likely to put their business in the hands of someone who dresses inappropriately and can’t seem to even take care of their own personal hygiene, let alone something as important as the business’s SEO campaign.
