Old English Bulldog Puppy For Sale: What To Consider Before You Buy

As a retired professional dog trainer and breeder, I tend to notice what goes on in the dog world in much more detail than the average dog owner or future dog owner. So when I see ads in the newspaper or online saying “Old English Bulldog Puppy For Sale” I think to myself… “This is great, but how many of these owners are really up to the task at hand?” in front?”

You will see that the problem with any breed of dog, especially English Bulldogs, is that not only do they have specific training that will uniquely complement the breed, it takes a trained eye to choose the best puppy to start with. Unlike many other larger and more popular dog breeds, you can’t just walk up to an English Bulldog breeder and pick up your new bulldog puppy. You have to know exactly what to look for and where to look for it, or you and your new pup will pay the price in the long run.

This article is just a small glimpse of the knowledge you will need to acquire, and you will need to do more research after reading this article, but it will be fun and easy research… I promise! Without further delay, here are some basic things you need to know and think about before acting on that new “Old English Bulldog Puppy For Sale” ad:

When it comes to looking for bulldogs, the main issue to keep in mind is the past, current, and future health of your future dogs. English bulldogs are large animals that make wonderful pets, but like most purebred dogs, they are at higher risk for many health problems. It is very important that before acting on any advertisement or wasting time visiting a breeder, you call ahead to verify the breeders reputation and the background of the puppies and their genetic bloodline. It would be best if you can find a line of certified purebred champion bulldogs. The next step is to find out the health history of your puppy’s parents and siblings.

Another very important topic of discussion, and one that I almost never see anyone bring up, is the initial behavior of the puppy towards you and the other dogs, it is very important that you know what to look for when you see the puppies in person. The English bulldog by nature is a very sweet dog who is extremely compassionate and a very close companion to his human owners. However, it is this character trait that could lead to problems from the start. Depending on the puppy’s parents and the breeder’s personality, he may become overly timid, compassionate, and overly dependent on his owner. This trait, more than many others, proves to be the start of many future behavior problems.

Last but not least, before you jump on another “Old English Bulldog puppy for sale” ad, be sure to take a hard look at who you are as the owner. The English bulldog makes a wonderful pet, but as with any other breed of dog, the dog and the owner must match…in terms of personality. The English bulldog is not a dog that needs a lot of exercise or physical stimulation, it is actually quite lazy in a sense, but it will need constant grooming and a bath from time to time. For most dog owners this is a perfect match, for others they want a dog that they can pull off 5 mile trail runs every day. If you are someone who is very physically active and wants to have your dog with you at all times, then this might not be the perfect breed for you.

Remember, there is a bit more study to be done on your part as a future English Bulldog owner, but it will be easy and fun research! There are many resources that can help you, but only a few good ones that are recommended. So before you jump on the “Old English Bulldog Puppy for sale” ad again… do your homework, I promise it will be worth every minute and dollar you spend!
