LPG Duel Fuel Cars

As the price of oil continues to rise, resulting in large increases in the price of gasoline and diesel, the popularity of dual-fuel cars is increasing.

In the UK, LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) at 70 pence a liter is almost half the price of diesel and petrol and for a motorist driving 12,000 miles a year and currently getting around 40 miles per gallon of gas. For motorists who only get 30mpg, the fuel cost savings is over £1,000 a year.

In the UK there are now over 1400 filling stations selling LPG and this number is increasing all the time and for motorists in big cities and towns access to fuel is not an issue. For Londoners, they also get the added bonus of not having to pay the congestion charge (currently £10 per day), so for those who drive to London every day the savings could be substantial on this alone.

For those unfamiliar with dual fuel cars, switching between LPG and petrol is usually as simple as the flip of a knob on the dashboard and on most vehicles there is hardly a noticeable change in performance.

Potential disadvantages are often a reduction in the size of the vehicle’s trunk due to the requirement of the second fuel tank and on cold winter days cars can be more difficult to start if they run on LPG.

You can buy new duel fuel cars or you can modify your existing vehicle. The cost of getting a modified petrol vehicle is usually around £1600 and the end benefits you will get from operating an LPG car will be slightly cheaper car tax due to the 20% lower emissions and the knowledge that You’re doing your part for the environment, as LPG vehicles emit 20% less carbon dioxide, a key contributor to global warming.
