It’s time to quit your job when

I have worked in some way since I was twelve years old. I started delivering newspapers in the neighborhood, worked as a collector at a local children’s clothing store, and did various jobs during college. I started working full time when I graduated in 1970 and have worked ever since. My last job lasted almost 25 years. Since college, I have been in advertising and marketing, which coincided with my degree. It had its ups and downs, but most of all it was financially rewarding and emotionally satisfying. Every workday, I would wake up and think about what the business world would bring me in the next few hours. For the most part, it was something he looked forward to.

But there were other factors involved. My co-workers were also my friends, to a large extent. Many were people he socialized with. Then there were the working conditions. This company provided the latest computers and internet access, fax machines, and my cell phone. It had a nice office with a view from the third floor, a dining room, and covered parking. I received a generous allowance for the car and many other benefits. Because he was in commissioned sales, he often received bonuses or “add-ons” as incentives along with prizes and trips to places like Hawaii for outstanding performance. I had a fantastic compensation package that included all my insurance, 401K, and pension plans. You could say I was spoiled and had nothing to complain about and you’d be right.

So why was he dreading work on certain days? Sure, I had to go to mandatory all-day meetings where I listened to statistical reports that were boring to the point of nausea, but so what? Many employees are dragged into meetings. Other days, I had to deal with irate customers or long trips with customers who rarely bought anything. However, all of that is part of a seller’s lot. So why were there days when you wanted to do anything other than go to work? Okay, I’m a bit of a crybaby, but who isn’t? So, getting back to my topic, what are the real warning signs that maybe it’s time for a change in the workplace scene?

It’s more than dreading meetings, confronting your boss, or waiting for more money. It is an attitude. Here are some basic warning signs that may cause you to reconsider your employment.

It’s time to quit your job when …

(1) You start having anxiety attacks when you just think about having to go to work.

(2) You constantly complain about the slightest work-related problem to your friends, family, or anyone who pays attention to you.

(3) Evenings and weekends are the only times you seem genuinely happy.

(4) You notice that you have more and more diseases that prevent you from working, or

(5) You have frequent headaches in the workplace.

(6) Find excuses to fight with coworkers.

(7) You have bad thoughts about your boss.

(8) You feel resentful of the company for almost no reason other than that you are there.

(9) Make up reasons why the product or service you sell is defective.

(10) Work is never satisfying on any level.

(11) As you drive to work, make up reasons why this day will be the worst day of your life.

(12) You are convinced that a vengeful God placed you in this position.

The bottom line is that there is no use being miserable. As if you were in a lousy marriage, it’s time to consider a divorce, in this case, from your job. You are probably thinking that this is easier said than done. You’re right, but life is too short to be stuck in a place you hate. It’s time to take search ads and rethink your future. You will be happier, you will be less sick and you will have more to wait each day. Remember, there is always a better job somewhere waiting for you if you are willing to look for it.
