Getting to know the Minn Kota Talon

A day of fishing is supposed to be about peace and quiet and no hassle. You catch more fish when it’s like this. Especially in calm, shallow water, successful fishing demands constant calm. And the shallow water anchor you use can go a long way in preventing or allowing the qualities necessary for a good day of fishing to manifest. The Minn Kota Talon Shallow Water Anchor is a new addition to the stern of many fishing boats offering an interesting alternative to the Power Pole Shallow Water Anchor. Let’s take a look at some things that are new and innovative about the Minn Kota Talon.

The key difference between this new anchor and most other shallow water anchors on the market, including the Power Pole, is that the Talon’s anchor adjustment system is electrical and mechanical, not hydraulic. This fact allows the operator to induce various software functions and special modes (more on this later) and operate the anchor with a wireless remote control. Electric operation can also speed things up, allowing the operator to push a button once and drop the anchor instead of having to hold the button the entire time the anchor is dropping.

The most impressive feature of the MK T, and one that is missing from hydraulic models like the Power Pole anchor, is the auto-driving feature. When the anchor is set, the auto drive applies three blows to drive the anchor safely to the bottom of the river/lake/ocean. These successive blows, all accomplished without time-consuming operator assistance, ensure that the anchor is firmly set.

One of the special features of the Talon, related to the automatic driving function, is the rough water mode. When the water gets choppy and threatens to pull you out of place, the anchor will apply an additional six hits on top of the three already applied via auto-driving. The Power Pole does not offer this function.

Also unique to this anchor is the wave absorbing mode which basically activates a hanger on the anchor allowing the anchor to move with the boat in waves or rough water. You don’t want to keep having to reset your anchor just because the waves are acting up a bit. That’s valuable fishing time lost!

Another special feature of the anchor is the electronic depth indicator located on the back of the anchor and easily visible from the rear of the boat. Each unit of depth is represented by an LED, and this allows you to accurately gauge how deep the anchor is already set, and how much deeper it can go. This feature, along with wave absorbing mode, auto drive and rough water mode are unique to the battery powered electronic operating system.

The Minn Kota Talon Shallow Water Anchor offers several advantages over hydraulic anchors like the Power Pole. Overall, the many unique modes and features make it easier to fish and enjoy the day.
