Choosing satellite over cable TV

Choosing between satellite and cable TV doesn’t have to be an agonizing decision. All it takes is a little research to see the benefits and drawbacks of both systems. Satellite, however, seems to have fewer drawbacks than the competition, while programming and profits continue to grow almost weekly.

Satellite television covers a much larger portion of the United States than can be accessed through cable television. Where cable can’t reach, due to terrain or the fact that a house is in the middle of nowhere, satellite is readily available. Cable is limited to those homes that already have cable lines or are on the cable route. Often the further one travels from a city or town, the less chance there is of cable being available. It takes a certain number of potential subscribers for the cable company to install cable lines. They wouldn’t do it for a single lonely house in the suburbs.

Another benefit that has helped many choose a satellite is the amount of programming that satellite companies can offer. In addition to all the regular broadcasts of popular channels, the satellite now offers more HD programming than its competitors. As more and more people buy HDTVs (thanks to falling prices over the past year), it becomes more and more important to have HD programming. Satellite also offers exclusive sports packages that cable doesn’t have. They have even started a service similar to video on demand to compete with cable.

This means that for about the same price as cable TV, subscribers can watch almost twice as many channels with satellite. This picture quality is also usually much better than cable. You can even get satellite Internet service with a DSL connection through your phone line, which is great for people who live in remote areas but need a high-speed Internet connection.

However, if you choose a satellite, you should keep in mind that the satellite must be in an area that is not obstructed by trees and other objects. If you live in an apartment, condo, or townhome complex, you’ll want to check with your property manager or HOA to make sure you can get a satellite. Many of these communities do not allow satellites as they believe they are an eyesore and detract from property value.

While some people stick with cable TV because it’s something they know and are comfortable with, they really should look into satellite TV just to see what it has to offer. You’ll certainly find a number of exciting channels that cable doesn’t offer, and the price can’t be beat. Add good service and high-speed Internet to the equation, and you’ll realize it might be time to make the switch.
