Chinese Crested: Facts You Should Know Before Adopting Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested Dog is an elegant, fine-boned toy dog that thrives on human company. With two varieties, this breed has Hairless and Powder puff, born from the same litter. Weighing between 5-12 pounds and 9-13 inches tall, this little breed is very rare and to me remains the most popular of the hairless type.
Coat
Powder Puff’s long, silky fur evenly covers the entire body. The hairless type, however, has a variable amount of long, silky hair on the head, ears, tail, and lower legs, with only fine, almost unnoticeable fur on the other parts of the body.
Exercise
Very vulnerable to weight gain, the Chinese Crested Dog needs to be active to avoid being lazy. They love to be taken for walks outside, and are good on a leash if properly socialized and used to being in new places and environments.
Temper
This affectionate little dog is a delightful person for families who appreciate the loving nature of the Chinese Crested Dog. They are often very nervous, jumping around in circles and playing non-stop. Their well-adjusted attitude makes them great with kids and toddlers of all ages. This breed does not make a good guard dog.

The maintenance skin of the hairless type is similar to that of humans: it is prone to dryness, sunburn and acne. Oil-free or hypoallergenic moisturizers keep skin from drying out if applied after bathing or every other day. Burns can occur in regions that expose them to strong UV rays, especially with lighter skin types.
Training
A rare breed with high trainability, the Chinese Crested is a naturally clean dog, even as a puppy. They avoid cluttering the house or the areas where they live. Socialization and exposure to new places, people and animals are important to keep them from being shy and scared.
Ideal for families who want pets that can do interesting tricks, the Chinese Crested Dog has been known to sit, jump over and through objects, and climb stairs with a relative amount of charm. But beware, you should not pamper these dogs too much. They are dogs, and they need time to just be dogs. So, socialize them with other dogs and household pets.
