Buying a purebred dog Vs rescuing a dog

If you are considering bringing a new dog into your home, one of the first decisions you must make is whether to purchase or rescue your next pet. Some people immediately turn to breeders, but this is not always the best option.

While there are many reputable breeders, many others operate puppy mills where dogs are treated inhumanely. By buying a dog from a disreputable breeder, you are financially supporting animal abuse.

Here are some reasons why it’s better to adopt than buy.

· save a life

The most obvious benefit of adoption is that you can save the life of a homeless animal that will likely be euthanized if a home is not found. These animals are discarded by their previous owners for a variety of reasons and all deserve a second chance at a forever home.

· Better health

Some breeds are predisposed to certain medical problems. Mixed breed dogs do not have such predispositions. This is not to say that all purebreds are in poor health or that all mixed breeds are in good health. Just keep in mind that some breeds have a high incidence of certain conditions.

·temperament tests

When you buy a puppy, you don’t have a real indicator of what his level of aggression will be. When you adopt from a rescue or shelter group, you get an animal that has almost always gone through some sort of temperament test. Most shelters and groups will not give up animals for adoption that have not passed the temperament test.

· less expensive

Another obvious benefit of adoption is that you won’t have to shell out as much money to pay for your dog. While breeders sell their thoroughbreds for $500-$2000, if you adopt, you’ll only have to pay a fraction of that.

Some people think that adoption is not an option if they want a puppy or a dog of a specific breed. This is not true. Shelters often have puppies that need good homes. If you want a specific breed, find a rescue group. Most breeds have their own rescue groups that specialize in rehoming dogs of a specific breed.

If you still prefer to buy a dog from a breeder, keep these points in mind.

· Visit to the breeder

NEVER buy a dog through a classified ad or online without visiting the breeder in person. You must check the conditions in which both the puppies and the mother and/or father are kept. A reputable breeder will insist on meeting you and will have no problem with you paying an on-site visit. If the breeder does not want you to visit in person, you are probably dealing with a puppy mill and should NOT do business with that person.

· consult references

Consult the references provided by the breeder. Most reputable breeders will have some affiliation with breed groups. Get a list of references and check them.

The decision to breed or buy can be the difference between life and death for many homeless animals. Consider this option carefully. If you choose not to adopt, be sure to spend your money with someone who cares more about the welfare of the dogs than keeping your money.
