As the city grew, the population increased, which led to a shortage of houses. By 1991, the city had a shortage of more than 83,800 housing units. In 1974, industries occupied 1,805 hectares of land, or about 11 per cent of the city’s area. In 1980, the Government developed 6,000 additional hectares for industries. However, this was only half of the planned industrial growth by 2001. Planners in Bangalore tried to alleviate the pressure on the city by setting up satellite towns in Yelahanka and Kengeri. But these attempts failed to reduce the pressure on the city and the surrounding areas because the satellite towns lacked the civic amenities.

However, North Bangalore is emerging as a new business centre with over 5,00,000 employees. A study by Brigade Group and Meraqi Research found that the work profile in this area has changed from IT/BPM to high-value consulting. The area’s residential catchment potential is also considerable.

Newspapers in Bangalore are thriving. In the last six years, the city has added two new dailies and two weekly magazines. And the Times of India group is planning to launch a daily soon. However, this is causing some discontent amongst local residents. While new migrants bring wealth, old Bangaloreans fear that their city will become too crowded.

The city is experiencing a large influx of migrant labour from neighbouring states. This influx has resulted in ample employment opportunities. People from Kerala and Tamil Nadu have settled in the city, and many have moved from their home districts. Some have even taken up jobs in Bangalore.

There is also a big religious divide in the city. This has led to some violent clashes in the past. However, the info-tech industry bypassed these conflicts by creating its own infrastructure and ensuring a positive image of the city. The state of Karnataka is central to the Modi government’s southern India push. It is one of five southern states where the BJP has taken power and has won the majority in four successive general elections.

The city is also known as the scientific capital of India. It is home to some of the country’s top-notch research institutions, including the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. The city’s ICT park grew to become the Silicon Valley of India. In 2007, the area surrounding the ICT park was designated as the district of Greater Bengaluru. However, this rapid growth of ICT-related activities has resulted in the decline of small manufacturing industries.

The property market in Devanahalli has a diverse portfolio, offering a diverse range of properties. Apartments, plotted developments, and affordable homes are all available to home buyers and renters. Several new projects are being planned for the suburb and offer promising investment opportunities. These developments are also attracting international visitors to the city.
