American History Unit 1 – New World Explorers Homeschool Curriculum

New World Explorers Homeschool Curriculum

When I first started homeschooling my children, we used a lot of different resources to teach American history. There were some that were great and some that didn’t. Here are some of my favorites that are still around today:

This is a literature-based curriculum for multiple age levels. Instead of day to day lessons, you get guides that give you information and activities that are designed to go along with the books you’re reading. They’re great for families who like to have a guide, but don’t want to have to follow all the details.

One of my favorite us history homeschool curriculum companies, Sonlight, offers a history curriculum that covers the whole history of the world in a chronological order. Kids love their easy-to-follow lessons, hands-on activities and historical backgrounds. They also have a series of American History homeschool curricula that goes through the history of our country 3 times between kindergarten and high school. The curriculum is written by a master storyteller and teaches the American nation from a Christian perspective.

My boys LOVE this homeschool history curriculum because it combines Bible, reading and history in one lesson! The children read a daily bible verse and then dive into rich literature based on American history. The books are beautifully illustrated and the stories come alive. They are jam packed full of the adventures, discoveries, innovations and achievements that built our country. They also learn about the heartbreak, injustices, tragedies and challenges that were part of this historic time.

Notgrass Homeschool Curriculum – This homeschool curriculum has a great reputation in the homeschool community and is perfect for those who love to use real books as their primary teaching tool. The curriculum includes a teacher’s manual and student workbook as well as DVDs for Socratic Method instruction.

Masterbooks History – This is another wonderful homeschool history curriculum that teaches the history of the world in a Charlotte Mason style. Angela O’Dell uses a lively storytelling approach to bring the stories and characters of world history to life for junior-high students (grades 6-8). Jim Hodges Audio Bücher – This is an audio book series that will make your child’s learning of American history easier and more fun! They’ve got several audiobook titles that cover early American history, and there are others too. They’re all good for children of all ages.

Well-Educated Heart – This site has a collection of classic audio books that are free to download from the public domain. You can listen to them yourself or assign them for independent reading. This is a fantastic resource for parents of middle schoolers and older because it has all the classic stories of the great Americans they need to study. They are very short, so they are great for those who have little time to read the book or listen to it in class.

Lastly, the National Geographic Kids website has an extensive list of children’s books and videos that you can use to teach history with your kids. They have a great selection of American History, and I’ve heard really good things about their history of our world and ancient Egypt.
