3 things you should never do while hiking

In fact, hiking is an enjoyable activity: you can see really beautiful natural scenery, breathe fresh air, and simply enjoy the peace and quiet of the great outdoors. But hiking can also cause harm, especially if you are a beginner who does not come prepared and does not take the necessary precautions.

There is much to learn about this wonderful outdoor activity and before you venture out on your first hike, it’s best to learn the most common hiking mistakes so you can avoid them. In this way, you will be able to execute your first successful walk.

Here are 3 things you should never do while walking:

Walk alone

Going solo on your first hike is a big no-no. Beginners should always hike with a group, a guide, or at least someone with experience or knowledge of the area. Even some experienced hikers don’t venture out alone, especially if they’re unfamiliar with the trail. So don’t think it’s going to be a walk in the park. Remember, overconfidence can be deadly!

If you must walk alone (which is not advisable), be sure to bring navigation, never go off the trail, and let others know when and where you are walking and what time you expect to be back. This way, first responders will know where to find you if you don’t return on time.

wear the wrong clothes

Even if you are going to walk a short distance, it is important to wear appropriate and comfortable clothing on the way. Do not wear cotton or denim. Instead, choose lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing: add layers when it’s cold and remove layers when it’s hot.

Just wear good socks and comfortable shoes to protect your feet (no flip flops!). Nothing ruins a day of hiking faster than a blister!

Bring the wrong snacks

You’ll need to pack a good supply of nutritious snacks and drinks (enough for the duration of your trek) to keep you energized. Do not bring junk food or treats without nutritional value that contribute nothing to your body during the walk.

Classic snacks that are good for the trail include trail mix, beef jerky, and energy bars. Salty snacks like pretzels are ideal as they replace salt lost through perspiration. While energy drinks replenish electrolytes, nothing beats water to replenish and refresh your body, so be sure to stay hydrated along the way.

There is a lot to learn once you get into the wonderful world of hiking. But as a beginner, it’s important to know the things you should never do while hiking!
