How to write a good introduction for your eBook

A good introduction is mandatory for an ebook. After all, eBooks are hard to read and require a huge investment of time. You must have a good presentation.

But how?

How do you write a good introduction for your eBook? How do you write an introduction that will engage your reader and focus them on reading the rest of your eBook?

Here are five techniques you can use to make your introductions engage your reader.

1. You can ask a question. Questions are excellent for focusing the reader’s attention. Questions make people stop and think. And if you ask the right questions, you’ll make your reader sit up and listen. What are the correct questions? They are the questions why your reader is reading your ebook. Is your eBook about exercise? How about asking if your reader’s muscles hurt? Or ask them if they know that the right exercise is the easiest way to lose weight?

2. You can make a controversial statement of your opinion. ‘Exercise is bad for you!’ That will make the coaching dads stop and listen (actually, as confirmed coaching dads, probably not). Or at least it will annoy some personal trainers. Depending on your audience, that could be the reaction you need to get people to read the rest of your eBook.

3. You can make an accusation. “Ebook writers don’t tell you everything they know!” However, be careful with this technique. Pick the wrong people and you might get knocked in the knees one night. (Too late for me!) But more importantly, it’s possible for a negative attack to turn your reader off.

4. You can make a promise. “In this book, you will find the only true solution to leaving toothpaste in your sink!” Again, by knowing what your reader’s top fears, dreams, and problems are, you can target that promise to be the solution they care about the most.

5. You can tell a story. Parables are one of the oldest forms of teaching that we know of. They were and are used in many ancient cultures. Some survive and some don’t. And in some cases only their stories remain, passed down through other cultures that also learned from the same stories. Why have these stories lasted so long? Why are they so powerful as an introduction? Because they connect two people on a fundamental level. They tell the reader: “We are the same, you and I. We feel the same.” And showing true empathy is a sure way to help two people agree.
