Garmin GPSmap 478 GPS Receiver Review – Don’t Buy Until You Read My Experience With Garmin 478!
The Garmin GPSmap 478 GPS receiver is the best land, road and marine GPS. I bought it in March 2009 and all I can say is what an amazing GPS unit! I had many GPS devices for the same purposes before, but this is hands down the best GPS device I have ever used. It is an excellent portable chartplotter and works perfectly in the car, on the sailboat and on the motorcycle. The mapping software coordinated with the GPS satellites is working. For road trips, this Garmin GPSmap 478 GPS receiver is very perfect with all its up-to-date points of interest. If you’re always willing to venture off the beaten path or venture off-road; then this unit actually throws out “breadcrumbs” so you can easily retrace your trail all the way, which is always a good thing. I have already recommended the Garmin GPSmap 478 GPS receiver to all my friends.
I was really surprised by the number of directions and waypoints built into this amazing device. All the markers, buoys and ports you needed were already in the device system. Even the two restaurant addresses I’ve been to in Chicago were already there.
The sheer number of page layouts the device has are great. It even lets you customize each page, making it easy for you to track a lot on just a few pages, or you can squeeze it all into one page by choosing a multi-column layout. Now I don’t even need to look at my compass anymore since it refreshes the pages so often.
The XM Weather feature that I use on both my boat and motorcycle is absolutely exceptional. It is an advanced device and therefore there are no other units like Nuvi or Zumo that can do everything that the 478 unit can.
The new Garmin 640 is meant to be a new upgrade for the Garmin GPSmap 478 GPS receiver, however don’t be fooled into buying the 640 which is XM only combined with marine mode not automotive mode because 640 is obviously a major downgrade in functionality than the 478. Also, the critically vital routing/track saving feature that the 478 has has been removed from the 640. So the 478 certainly is great!
I was originally considering using other devices of the same type, but I’m very glad I found this device because of its comprehensive functionality that I couldn’t find on other devices.
